# How to Add Breadcrumbs with Parent Page in Elementor?

## Before You Start

- **Edition:** **Free** — the Breadcrumbs Bar widget is in the free plugin as well as Pro, and the trail it builds is the same in both.- **Widget to enable:** Breadcrumbs Bar, switched on under **The Plus Addons > Widgets**.- **Where to add it:** the template for the pages you want it on — a header template shows it site-wide, a single or archive template shows it on those pages only.

## How to Show the Parent Page in the Breadcrumb

- Add the **Breadcrumbs Bar** widget to the template for the pages you want it on.- Open **Extra Option** and check that **Parent** is set to **Show**. It is on by default.

- Publish, then open a page that has a parent.

The trail now lists every level between the home page and the page being viewed:

## What Counts as a Parent

## Hiding the Parent Steps

Set **Parent** to **Hide** for a short trail of just the home link and the current page:

- Parent steps are links; the current page is plain text.- The widget works out the path from the page being viewed, so one widget in a header template covers every page on the site.- Turning **Parent** off removes the ancestors on pages, posts and products.- The setting behaves the same in the free plugin and in Pro.

## Limitations

- **Parent** set to Hide is ignored on category archives: the parent category is still shown there.- A page with no parent has no parent step, so the trail is the home link and the page title.- **Letter Limit > Parent** in the **Special Option** section does not shorten parent titles. Only the **Current** limit works.- The widget does not load Font Awesome, so the home and separator icons come out blank on a page where nothing else loads it.

## Troubleshooting

### The parent page is missing from the trail

Check that the page actually has a parent in **Page Attributes**, and that **Parent** in **Extra Option** is set to **Show**.

### A post shows no category step

The post's categories are its parent steps. Assign the post to a category.

### The parent category still shows after turning Parent off

You are on a category archive. The switch is ignored there; it works on pages, posts and products.
