How to Display Posts Using an AJAX Filter in Client Listing?

Table Of Content

The Clients widget can filter its logos by category in two different ways, and the difference matters as soon as you list fewer clients than you have.

This page explains both, and says plainly which of the two works in version 6.5.0.

Requirement – This widget is a part of The Plus Addons for Elementor, make sure it’s installed & activated to enjoy all its powers.

Before You Start

  • Edition: Pro — the Clients widget is free, but Category Wise Filter and Filter Type needs The Plus Addons for Elementor Pro.
  • Widget to enable: Clients, under The Plus Addons > Widgets. Elementor shows it in the Listing group.
  • Prerequisite: your clients must be sorted into Tp Clients Category terms. The filter reads that taxonomy, so a category with no clients in it never appears.

Where the setting is

  1. Edit the page with Elementor and select the Clients widget.
  2. In Layout, pick Grid or Masonry and leave Select Source on Post Type.
  3. Under Content Source, set Maximum Posts Display lower than your number of clients — otherwise the two filter types behave identically.
  4. Open Category Wise Filter, switch Category Wise Filter to Show, and you will see the Filter Type dropdown with Normal and AJAX.

What the two options mean

Filter TypeWhat it is meant to do
NormalFilters only the logos already on the page. With Maximum Posts Display set to 3 and 8 clients in total, picking a category searches those 3 and hides the ones that do not match.
AJAXFetches matching logos from the whole list, so picking a category searches all 8 clients and then shows up to 3 of the matches.

Here is Normal at work — three logos listed, one of them in the category that was picked:

AJAX does not work in version 6.5.0

This is worth saying plainly rather than describing a feature that will not work for you. With Filter Type set to AJAX and the page published, clicking a category button makes the logos turn into grey placeholder blocks and stay that way. The list never changes, no matter which category you pick.

The request the page sends to the server is rejected before it reaches the filter, so nothing comes back. It happens with Search Type on either Slug or ID, and on a page with no other plugins involved.

Leave Filter Type on Normal. If you want the filter to reach every client, raise Maximum Posts Display so they are all on the page — Normal will then search all of them.

How It Behaves

  • Normal hides and shows logos that are already in the page, so it is instant and needs no request to the server.
  • The All button brings the hidden logos back and carries a count of the logos listed.
  • Categories with no clients in them are not drawn at all.
  • Filter Type only appears while Category Wise Filter is on and Select Source is Post Type.

Limitations

  • AJAX filtering is broken in 6.5.0 — the listing is replaced by placeholders and never filters.
  • Anything built on AJAX filtering is affected, including a shareable URL made from the category filter.
  • Normal cannot find a client that is not on the page. Raise Maximum Posts Display if that matters.
  • Neither filter type is available for the Carousel layout or the Repeater source.

Troubleshooting

The logos turn into grey blocks and stay there

That is Filter Type on AJAX. Switch it back to Normal and update the page.

Picking a category shows nothing

With Normal the filter only searches what is listed. Raise Maximum Posts Display so the matching clients are on the page.

The Filter Type dropdown is not there

Turn on Category Wise Filter first, and make sure Select Source is Post Type.
