For search engines, each question-and-answer pair is a candidate for a rich snippet directly in the search results, which is why the schema side matters as much as the visual side. The two are connected: an accordion built from real, distinct questions with genuinely useful answers is exactly the kind of content FAQ schema was designed to describe, and one built from filler questions just to check a schema box tends to get ignored or, worse, manually reviewed and penalized.
Building the Accordion in Elementor
Follow these steps in order:
- Drag the Accordion widget from the free widget panel onto the page.
- Add one item per question using the Create Unlimited Accordion Tabs control. Each item has a title, which becomes the visible question, and a content area, which holds the answer and accepts both plain text and nested Elementor content.
- Phrase questions the way a visitor would actually ask them, not as marketing headlines.
- Choose a layout under Vertical & Horizontal Accordion Layout: vertical for a standard stacked FAQ section, horizontal for a compact sidebar or footer block. This is a layout choice, not a schema choice — the underlying question-and-answer structure stays the same either way.
Enabling FAQ Schema Markup
With the questions and answers in place, open the widget’s Content tab and go to Extra Option. Toggle on SEO Schema Markup. This is a Pro-only control: it reads the accordion’s own titles and content and outputs valid FAQPage structured data automatically, using the exact question and answer text already in the widget, so there’s no separate JSON to write or keep in sync by hand. If a question gets edited later, the schema updates with it because it’s generated from the same source.

Styling the Accordion
The Style tab controls everything below without touching custom CSS:
- Custom Icon for Each Accordion Item — set separate open and close icons, so a plus sign can turn into a minus, or a chevron can flip direction, when an item expands.
- Open Accordion Item on Hover — worth turning off for most FAQ sections; hover-to-open reads well for a menu but feels accidental on a page visitors are trying to read carefully.
- Per-state color, spacing, and typography — controls apply separately to normal, hover, and active states, so the open question can be visually distinct from the collapsed ones without any extra markup.
Advanced Options: Search, Auto-Play, and Carousel Sync
A few controls go beyond what a stock FAQ widget usually offers:
- Add Search Bar for Accordion Content — turns a long FAQ list into something visitors can filter by keyword instead of scanning top to bottom, useful once a support-style FAQ passes ten or twelve items.
- Auto Play Accordion Item Opening & Closing — cycles through items automatically, which suits a highlights section more than a support FAQ, but is available if the design calls for it.
- Connect Accordion with Carousel Slider — pairs an accordion with a linked image or content carousel, so opening a question can also advance a slide, a pattern more common in a product-feature FAQ than a plain support page.
- Expand/Collapse all Accordion Items on Button Click — rounds out the set for FAQ sections long enough that visitors might want to open (or close) everything at once.
Testing Your Schema
Turning the toggle on isn’t the same as confirming it worked. After publishing, run the live page URL through Google’s Rich Results Test. A valid FAQ accordion shows up as a detected FAQPage item with every question and answer pair listed and no errors. If the test comes back empty, double check that SEO Schema Markup is actually enabled on the specific accordion instance on that page (it’s set per-widget, not globally) and that the page has been viewed by a real, published URL rather than a preview link, since some testing tools won’t fetch draft content.
- Test the exact live URL, not a staging or preview link.
- Confirm the toggle is on for every accordion instance on the page, not just the first one added.
- Re-run the test after any content edit, since the schema regenerates from the widget’s current text.
