# Free WordPress SEO Audit Tools (and the AI Audit They All Miss)

Every few weeks someone asks me what the best free SEO audit tool is. The honest answer is shorter than they expect: a couple of tools cover almost everything, most of the paid ones are overkill for a single WordPress site, and there is one audit that none of the usual tools run yet. That last one is where most sites are quietly losing ground in 2026.

So this is the practical version. The free tools I actually use to audit a WordPress site, what each one is good for, and the AI-readiness audit that the traditional crawlers do not touch.

## What an SEO audit actually checks

An SEO audit is just a structured health check of your site. A complete one covers four areas:

- **Technical:** crawlability, indexing, broken links, redirects, sitemaps, structured data.

- **On-page:** titles, meta descriptions, headings, internal links, content depth.

- **Performance:** Core Web Vitals, page speed, mobile usability.

- **AI readiness:** whether AI search engines can actually read, understand, and cite your pages. This is the new one, and it is the one almost nobody audits.

Most free tools handle the first three well. The fourth needs a different kind of tool, which we will get to.

## The best free SEO audit tools for WordPress

You can cover the classic audit without paying for anything. Here is the short list that does the job:

- **Rank Math Site SEO Score:** a built-in audit right inside WordPress that scans your site and flags issues across basic SEO, advanced SEO, performance, security, and Search Console. The fastest way to spot on-page gaps without leaving your dashboard.

- **Google Search Console:** free and authoritative. It shows how Google actually crawls and indexes you, which queries you rank for, and coverage or enhancement errors. If you run nothing else, run this.

- **Google PageSpeed Insights:** the reference check for Core Web Vitals and page speed on mobile and desktop.

- **Screaming Frog SEO Spider:** its free tier crawls up to 500 URLs and is excellent for finding broken links, redirect chains, duplicate titles, and missing metadata.

- **Ahrefs Webmaster Tools:** free for verified site owners, with a site audit crawler and a simplified backlink view.

Pair Rank Math and Search Console for the on-page and indexing picture, add PageSpeed for performance, and reach for Screaming Frog when you need a deeper technical crawl. ## The audit those tools do not run: AI readiness

Here is the gap. Every tool above audits your site for Google's blue links. None of them tell you whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI answers can read your content and cite you. In 2026 that is no longer a side question. A growing share of searches end in an AI answer, and being the source that answer quotes is its own discipline, sometimes called answer engine optimization.

AI readiness is auditable, just not by a traditional crawler. It comes down to things like: do your pages expose clean structured data, do you have author and entity signals, is your content fresh, can AI crawlers reach you, and are you even showing up in their training and citation pools. We cover the why in [Google AI Overview for WordPress](https://theplusaddons.com/blog/google-ai-overview-wordpress/) and the how in [how to get ChatGPT citations](https://theplusaddons.com/blog/how-to-get-chatgpt-citations-wordpress/).

## Audit your AI readiness for free with RankReady

This is the part the other tools leave open, and it is exactly what [RankReady](https://store.posimyth.com/plugins/rankready/) audits. It is a free WordPress plugin built for the AI-search era, and it runs the audit the crawlers skip:

- **Agentic Readiness Scorecard:** a single percentage at the top of your dashboard telling you how AI-ready your whole site is, broken into 22 specific signals.

- **Per-post readiness score:** every post gets a 0 to 100 score based on schema, freshness, content depth, and author signals, so you know which pages to fix first.

- **Live AI crawler log:** see which of 31 AI crawlers, including GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot, are actually hitting your site.

- **Citation candidates and AI referral tracking:** see which pages are most likely to get cited and whether AI engines are sending you traffic.

It also generates the technical scaffolding AI engines look for: LLMs.txt, markdown endpoints for every post, and Article, Speakable, FAQPage, and HowTo schema. It is free forever, GPL licensed, and runs on WordPress 6.0 or higher. If you want the structured-data side of this explained, see [schema markup for AI citations](https://theplusaddons.com/blog/schema-markup-ai-citations-wordpress/).

The honest framing: RankReady does not replace Screaming Frog or PageSpeed. It audits a dimension they do not measure at all. You want both.

## Run a complete free audit: combine both layers

Here is the full free audit I would run on any WordPress site today:

- Run Rank Math Site SEO Score for the on-page and structured-data baseline.

- Check Google Search Console for indexing and coverage issues.

- Run PageSpeed Insights on your key templates for Core Web Vitals.

- Crawl with Screaming Frog (up to 500 URLs free) for broken links and metadata gaps.

- Install RankReady and read your Agentic Readiness Scorecard, then fix the lowest-scoring posts first.

- Re-check the AI crawler log after a couple of weeks to confirm bots are reaching your fixed pages.

That sequence costs nothing and covers both the Google audit and the AI audit. Most sites have never run step five, which is exactly why it is the fastest place to gain ground.

## The audit worth running this week

You do not need a paid SaaS subscription to audit a WordPress site properly. Rank Math, Search Console, PageSpeed, and Screaming Frog cover the classic ground for free. The piece most sites are missing is the AI-readiness audit, and that is the one with the least competition right now. If you only add one new thing to your routine, make it that.
